One of the first questions most new podcasters ask me is "Where should I host my podcast?"
This is an important question because the wrong answer can mean a very large bill from your Internet Service Provider. Since podcasts tend to be large files, if you use a service that offers metered bandwidth, you'll end up paying through the nose if you get lots of subscribers. Also, most regular ISPs are not set up for podcasts.
Fortunately, there are several podcast-dedicated hosts available. And while I can't tell you which service to use, I can tell you which one I selected.
I use Libsyn. Libsyn is a podcast hosting company. It provides inexpensive podcasting services with unmetered bandwidth. Their motto is "podcasting made easy" and I'd have to say they live up to it.
Libsyn can provide you with everything from a place to park your podcast to a landing zone for your show blog and show notes. They even take care of the dreaded RSS enclosure. If you can find your way around something like "Blogger" you can use Libsyn.
Now here's the best part of the Libsyn story. They are affordable. In fact, I'm worried for them they're so cheap. I don't see how they can do what they do for the small amount of money they charge. Their fees start at $5.00 per month for unmetered bandwidth. They'll never penalize you for success. If lots of people start listening to your podcast, you still pay $5.00 per month, depending on how many shows you create each month and how large they are. The fees could run as high as $30 per month if you have lots of large files you want to park on their server, but that's still a bargain.
Libsyn doesn't work like the cell phone company. There's no long-term contract to sign. You pay them as you go and they do all the heavy lifting.
The company is run by a bunch of young kids. And they are very smart and dedicated to their work. If only the rest of the world ran as smoothly and fairly as Libsyn!
If you are looking for a podcast host, you might want to give Libsyn a try. They work with corporations, small businesses, large businesses and even barroom musicians.
And in case you're wondering, they are not a sponsor of this site nor do I have any business relationship with Libsyn beyond their hosting service for my podcasts. I just think they are worth the plug.
