I've examined this issue at length and think the answer is that you need to have some of the same traits it takes to be a successful radio broadcaster. Here is my list, in no particular order:
*A topic that you are both familiar with and passionate about.
*A willingness to help others.
*A strong desire to tell a story or to communicate with people.
*Moderate to large amount of ambition.
*A fair amount of self-confidence.
*A willingness to critique yourself.
*A strong distaste for boredom.
*Determination, fearlessness, patience and resilience.
*A sense that you could always do better.
*Fear of having to get a real job.
If you have at least seven of these traits, I'd say you're well on your way to having what it takes to be a podcaster. There might be one more I'd throw in as an afterthought…if you want to be a professional podcaster, you must be willing to constantly explain how you earn a living to your father-in-law.
